John Hynes

John grew up alongside his brother James under the care of their mother, Eileen, after the untimely passing of their father, an NYPD officer.  Influenced by the legacy of his late father, as well as several uncles and cousins who all served in the NYPD, John always aspired to become a police officer.

His career in law enforcement began in 1989 when he joined the City of New Rochelle Police Department. In 1991, he became part of the pioneering Community Problem Oriented Policing (CPOP) unit, focusing on addressing quality of life issues among residents, business owners, and the homeless.

In 1992, John transitioned to the Village of Pelham Police DepartmentHe played a crucial role in establishing Pelham’s first CPOP unit, even introducing a bicycle patrol initiative. His commitment to professional growth led him to become a certified DARE officer, New York State certified police juvenile officer, a General Topics instructor and Hostage Negotiator. In 2002 John was promoted to detective and is credited for making numerous arrests and has over twenty Class Awards.  John retired in 2021. 

John’s dedication to his community is evident through his active involvement. He is a revered figure in Pelham, affectionately known as the “Mayor.” With his wife Jessica, a former Deputy Town Clerk of Pelham, and their three daughters—Julianne, Catherine, and Sofia—he resides in Pelham. He has coached for Pelham Little League, is actively engaged in the Danny Fund, is President of the Police Emerald Society of Westchester County, and was a past President of the State of New York Police Juvenile Officers Association. Notably, he was the first father to serve as president of Hutchinson Elementary School PTA.

John’s commitment to education is equally noteworthy. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Mercy College and is currently pursuing a master’s degree from Iona University.
